What is Billboard Top 100?

Basically, the Billboard charts tally weekly the most popular songs and even albums in the United States and around the world, and the tabulated results are seen in their magazine, Billboard. Genres such as R&B and rock, or probably all genres of music, are included in the charts, and the songs or albums are tabulated based on airplays, streams, sales, and song charts like Hot 100.

They monitor streaming and sales on a weekly basis during Friday to Thursday since July of last year (2015), but before, it was being monitored from Monday to Sunday. Airplays on the other hand has a Monday-to-Sunday basis, which was Wednesday to Tuesday before. The updating of charts will be the following Tuesday, which is 11 days later.

Billboard Background

In July 1940, the Music Popularity Chart was tabulated, and Billboard magazine printed its first ever music hit parade, which was on January 4, 1936. By mid-1958, different types of song charts were released that was compiled into the Hot 100. Streaming, single sales, downloads, and radio airplays comprise the Hot 100 songs, and this includes views on YouTube and other video sites. The charts differ, however, in stores and radio stations because each genre of music targets different groups of audience. And of course, each genre has its own respective departments in Billboard handled by an assigned chart manager.

At first, there were separate charts for measures of popularity such as best selling records, disk jockey playing, and juke box song selection. Later over the years, a single chart combined all these charts and produced the top 100 songs. The three aforementioned charts were stopped after the June 17, 1957 issue for the juke box, the July 28, 1958 issue for the disk jockey, and the October 13, 1958 issue for the best seller. The week after the July 28, 1958 issue was the first release for the Hot 100 songs. Aside from the Hot 100 that was created, Billboard produces many kinds of charts for the following genres: country, rock, bluegrass, dance, classical, jazz, rap, R&B, pop, electronic, Latin, comedy albums, Christian music, catalog albums, and ringtones for cellphones. Billboard expanded into providing lyrics and collaborated with MetroLyrics for 10 lyrics in each chart.

Billboard also released its year-end charts, and results were printed in their year-end issue and radio aired in the year-end edition of American Top 40 and American Country Countdown. Billboard Music Awards came in between 1991 and 2006, and the best single/artist(s)/album in each of those charts was/were given. The awards were done every December of the given period of years before it ceased in 2007. However, in May 2011, the said awards resumed.
