Hot Latin Charts

The formerly called Hot Latin Tracks and Hot Latin 50, which is now Hot Latin Songs, is a song chart printed by Billboard magazine. Often, the chart is known in the United States’s music industry as the most important Latin music in Spanish. On September 6, 1986, Rocío Dúrcal was the first Latin singer to reach number 1 on the chart with the song La Guirnalda in which the chart was also established the same year.

The said chart ranks hit songs according to radio airplays on Latin radio stations. Although it is a Latin music chart, it does not only feature purely Latin music. It also ranks songs in English and Portuguese languages. In the year 1994, there were three additional Latin music charts that also tabulated hit tracks, and these charts were Latin Pop Airplay, Latin Regional Mexican Airplay, and Latin Tropical Airplay. These additional charts feature pop songs not only in Spanish but also other languages, different music styles in different Mexican music genres, and different genres of tropical music, respectively.

In the year 2005, another chart was established that was created because of the rapid influence of hip hop and reggae (Latin) that is called Latin Rhythm Airplay. Another source of releasing the Hot Latin Songs is on Telemundo’s page, via the two companies’ partnership. A change of how the chart was published is through streaming and downloads, in addition to radio airplays, which was done in October 2012. However, as of now, only Spanish-language tracks are being seen on the chart. For the chart that only displays songs being played on radios, Latin Airplay chart handles it.

The Birth of Latin Music

Latin music started ages ago from the African slaves who brought with them the melody and beats that became the the greatest inspiration for the music that entered the Americas. It began because of the great influence of indigenous music like the ones from the Mayas, who have huge interest in music, that plays all types of percussion and wind musical instruments. A lot of pre-Columbine cultures played wind musical instruments in which all kinds of flutes were made within the entire continent. Its musical expression is visible now in some traditional Latin music like the Andean music of South America. The rhythms have been passed down from generation to generation with Latin music associated with countries such as Argentina, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, Columbia, and Mexico.
